Edwin Grant (1838–1896) was a photographer active in Faringdon and Swindon during the 1870s and later nineteenth century. His photographic work included both portraiture and topographical views. By the 1870s he was operating a studio at 2 Cambria Villas, Swindon, where he produced carte-de-visite portraits. He also used an address in Marlborough Terrace, Newport Street, Old Swindon.
Grant's topographical work includes three known carte-de-visite views of Faringdon, providing a photographic record of the town during the period when the CDV was becoming an increasingly popular means of recording local places. Two different card backs are represented, one a simple text design and the other more ornate, suggesting that the views were produced at different stages of his career.
His surviving portraits show that studio photography formed an important part of his business, while the Faringdon views demonstrate an interest in recording the local environment as well as its inhabitants. Other surviving examples indicate that his photographic activities extended across the surrounding district.
Grant was one of a number of provincial photographers whose work linked the expanding portrait trade with the production of inexpensive topographical photographs, leaving a valuable record of the towns and countryside of the area. |
